Before you can choose a travel guidebook for your next trip, you need to think about what the focus of your trip will be. Some guidebooks have in-depth cultural information and give you lots of history about the area. Some concentrate more on seeing the major sights, finding accommodations, and telling you how to get around on local transportation. There really isn’t a single series that will cover everything for every trip. You might even find you like certain things about two different guidebook series. Well, why not buy them both? You don’t have to carry them both around you know. We’ve even heard of people who cut them up…. while we, personally, have a hard time with dissecting books, it’s really not a crime. Take the sections with you that you need. Cut them up into little sections so you can take just the sightseeing notes you need for the day. If you really want that book for a souvenir of your trip, buy two copies and leave the whole one at home. Even if you’re a budget traveler, go ahead and spend wisely on a travel guidebook… a good one will SAVE you money on your trip. Check through several different guidebooks. Do they cater to luxury travel? Can you afford the hotels and restaurants they’re recommending? Are they talking to backpackers and college kids? Do they list mostly hostels and cheap hotels? Get one that recommends accommodations that fit your budget. See who has written the book, and what their expertise is in the region. Has the author traveled often in the area? Does he or she write in a style that makes you want to go and see these things for yourself? Have they checked out the hotels, eaten at the restaurants? If one book has things like long, scholarly explanations about the foundations for castles, and you’re just not interested in that…, you might want to look for a different guide. Maybe something with lots of pictures to fire your imagination. You can check some out of your local library and take your time looking at them, but also go to a large bookstore or one that specializes in travel so you can check out a really large selection of guides. If you find one that makes you feel like you can’t wait it get THERE and see THAT, then you’ve probably found the right one for you. Once you’ve found the right one, or two, that will work for your travels, make sure you get the most current edition available and relax…. you can’t make a wrong decision. Any good guidebook will be a help. If you need more information, you can probably find brochures or even guidebooks on you trip…. now THOSE could be great souvenirs.

As an avid traveller, there are five countries that stand out in my experience as places you really ought to make an effort to visit if at all possible. Here they are, together with my reasons.

1. Egypt: The Pyramids, of course, King Tutenkhamens Tomb, The Valley of The Kings. Wonderful places in their own right, but it’s not all about artifacts and spectacular buildings etc. The Egyptian people are generous, kind, and welcoming. Happy to share anything, even if they have very little themselves.

Try a trip on the Nile in a felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat). Late afternoon is best, when you can experience the setting sun.

2. China: Not somewhere that immediately springs to mind when planning a travelling trip, but you really should, and it is becoming more popular as a destination, particularly since the Beijing Olympics. Plan for a minimum of 7 days, a fortnight would be better. Take in Beijing, Xian, Shanghai (great for shopping), and a Yangtze river cruise is a must.

For the more adventurous, and a great experience go to Guilin. The landscape is awe-inspiring. Not really mountainous as such, but the peaks seem to rise almost vertically into the sky. Take a ski lift to the top of one of the peaks and get a toboggan down the 3000 feet.

3. Jordan: You could take in Jordan by combining it with a trip to Egypt. Cairo is only just over 300 miles from Amman, the capital, a wonderful place full of history, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Do also go to Petra. This archaeological site is renowned for it’s rock-cut architecture, and is one of the new seven wonders of the world.

Of course no visit to Jordan would be complete without a visit to the Dead Sea, this has so much concentration of salt and minerals in it that you can actually sit in the sea and read a book without getting it wet. Again, don’t plan on a flying visit, to do Jordan justice you should be thinking of ten days.

4. Hong Kong: An amazing, frenetic, bustling place that fortunately has been pretty much left as it was by the Chinese since the end of the British lease in 1997.

As everyone knows, Hong Kong is the place to shop. Wander along Nathan Road and visit Temple Street Market for some terrific bargains. Don’t forget that the asking price is a starting price, and haggling is the name of the game. You’ll probably get to enjoy it, as the Chinese do.

As well as being a hustling metropolis, there is a wealth of tradition in Hong Kong too. A trip to Victoria Peak is a must do, although the weather does not always let you take advantage of the spectacular views. But ever enterprising, you will find locals at the top who will take your picture and digitally impose a clear background of the view at its best.

You can also take boat trips out to some of the surrounding Islands. A great way to chill out after some hard shopping!

5. Thailand: Yes, I know, Thailand does have a somewhat seedy reputation, especially in areas such as Bankok and Phuket. But away from those well known areas there is a remarkable country of culture and the most warm, friendly people.

There is one place you can go called the Thai Tiger Temple at Kanchanaburi where you can stroke live tigers, somewhat domesticated by the monks. Whatever you may feel about that, it is certainly an interesting experience.

Well, there you have it. Five countries you really should make an effort to visit. I hope that I have given you food for thought so that you may raise the bar a little when you next plan a trip.

The Greek Islands consist of more than 6000 islets and islands belonging to Greece out of which only 227 have been inhabited. The most populous and largest Greek island is Crete and the second largest one is the Euboea.

The islands have been traditionally grouped in the following the following clusters: Cyclades, Argo-Saronic islands, North-Aegean islands, Dodecanese, Sporades and Ionian islands.

In accordance to the tourist attractions, things to do and facilities available the top 10 Greek islands are Santorini, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Mykonos, Paros, Skiathos, Los, Naxos and Sifnos. Greece has a lot to offer to all those who travel to its shores.

Many holiday makers come to the Greek Islands and stay in holiday rentals. There are many holiday villas and self catering holiday apartments that can be rented as holiday homes. Self catering holiday accommodation is a great and cheap way to experience the Greek Islands to the full. By renting holiday homes in Greece you are able to use them as a base to explore the local culture.

There are several ruins and museums in almost all cities of Greece and the Greek islands are incredible with their golden beaches and deep blue waters. The first thing you can do on the Greek islands is to step on a dream cruise which will take you from the Aegean Sea to the distant shores out of which the above mentioned islands are the most favorites.

The second best thing to do that most travelers look forward to is shopping in the Greek islands. There are many booth and sidewalk stores that are laden with items that you can buy and present them to your family members back home.

Almost all types of goods are included in these shops including clothing, pottery, post cards, jewelry and local soaps. Although the variety of goods is huge, they are available at such a low cost that you will find it hard not to buy something.

The third attraction for which a large number of people visit the Greek islands is its cuisines. Gyros is one of the most favorite Greek cuisines which consists of a slice of meat from a huge roast which can be chicken, lamb or beef.

There are several restaurants that serve this popular dish and also several take out stands which serve this dish in pita bread as sandwich. Calamari is also one of the Greek seafood specialties which is found in the menus of almost every restaurant. It is a fresh squid deep fried and cut into rings.

Whether you are looking for an unspoilt deserted beach or an action-packed resort lined with several lively bars and tavernas, then you can explore the Greek islands here and enjoy whatever you are looking for on its beaches. Some of the beaches are even awarded for their excellence and cleanliness.

The fourth thing you should not forget to do on the Greek islands is to relax on their beaches and have a luxurious walk on their stunning coastlines. With this, you will be able to explore the past meadows and rural villages of the Greek islands that are full of spring flowers for the delight of the visitors.

Other than water activities, you can also enjoy mountain biking, tennis, golf and horse riding on the Greek islands.

Hotel and holiday bookings have been in decline on the Mediterranean island of Malta, but the hope is that 2007 will see new life breathed into her hotel and holidays industry.

The Malta hotels and holiday industry are major players in the island’s economy, and with unemployment already high, a further drop in the number of visitors next year could have a negative impact not just in tourism but for Malta as a whole.

Throughout the year the monthly statistics for the number of tourists visiting Malta have made depressing reading for the Malta hotels, and the next twelve months will be pivotal as to whether the island can stay in the mainstream of holiday destinations, or be relegated to niche travel status.

The island was rife with rumours earlier in the year that a UK tour operator was going to withdraw the island from their 2007 brochures, and a survey in the island’s biggest market showed that Malta would be more expensive for British tourists than the Canary and Balearic Islands for equivalent holidays next year.

But more recent news has brought hope to the holidays in Malta market that 2007 will see an arrest in the decline of visitor numbers seen this year, with MyTravel surprising the holidays in Malta market by announcing an increase in the number of winter visitors it will be taking from the UK to Malta.

But the most positive news has come from low cost carrier RyanAir, who have started cheap flights to Malta from London and Dublin.

Between announcing the Dublin and London routes and the maiden flight to Malta, Ryanair sold 30,000 tickets. And the new competition has spurred Air Malta, the island’s national airline, to make offers of its own. A successful campaign saw two tickets a minute being sold recently.

‘This is all good news,’ say Malta hotels and holidays guide, ‘Earlier in the year it looked like there was only one way that the visitor figures for Malta were going for the future, and that was in a continuing downward spiral.’

At one stage earlier in the year there were real doubts cast upon whether the Malta Government would approve the new low cost flights at all. Air Malta is a major employer and some in the tourist sector felt that too much of a protectionist attitude was being taken at the expense of a possible upswing in new visitors.

‘Unfortunately,’ continue YourMalta, ‘The Malta Tourist Authority and The Malta government seem to to make life as difficult as possible for the island’s hotel owners and those involved in the holiday industry. A privately run company like Ryanair will achieve more and bring more money on to the island than the Tourist Authority can ever dream of. And Ryanair will probably make a profit out of it while the Tourist Authority is using taxpayers money. We’re just waiting for the first set of figures where tourism has risen, and for the Malta Tourist Authority to claim part or all of the credit. In reality if tourist figures do rise it’s despite the Tourist Authority, and not because of it’.
Weather in Malta

Speaking on a visit to Malta recently, Ryanair’s Chief Executive Michael O’Leary declared himself pleased with their new Luton route, and predicted that their Dublin route, due to start operating in February, would be even more successful. He believes that Ryanair could take some 85,000 visitors to the island in 2007.

‘If Ryanair do deliver 85,000 visitors to Malta in 2007 it will stop the perpetual decline in overall tourist numbers,’ say YourMalta, ‘It depends of course on whether a large number will be new visitors or simply those who would have visited Malta anyway. We believe the likelihood is that a good deal of the 85,000 will be new visitors who hadn’t considered a Malta holiday before. With Air Malta fighting back and having successful promotions too there is every reason to feel confident that 2007 will prove to be a good year for Malta tourism. Hopefully it will prove to be a turning point and not a delay in the downward spiral of the last few years’.

The real estate industry in Malta also produces a good deal of inward investment for the Malta economy, and increased visitor numbers often correlate to an increase in Malta property prices.

According to Tribune Properties, a UK based company who specialise in Malta property for sale, property inflation could be in double digits next year.

‘Malta property buyers from overseas start as tourists, and with new tourists arriving next year in increased numbers we do expect this to have some impact on the market overall. The weather in Malta is always a plus point when potential buyers are considering where to buy a holiday home. But ease of access is a critical factor, and with the new flights at reduced prices it makes spending a few long weekends on Malta as well as the traditional week and fortnight holiday a realistic possibility for more people.’

Travel guide YourMalta do offer a cautionary note, urging the Malta authorities to invest in better roads and other infrastructure.

‘It’s important that holidaymakers want to return to the island in future years, and not just visit once – never to look at a holiday brochure and a map of Malta with good memories and return. The Malta hotels are on a par with the rest of Europe, but if they step outside to dangerous pavements, unclean beaches and a timeshare tout around every corner ready with a high pressure sales pitch they won’t return. Hopefully the Malta Tourist Authority will be doing as much as they can ensure a pleasant Malta holiday experience’.

The stunning natural beauty of bright blue seas, ancient archaeological sites, charming island villages, and a hot, mainly dry climate, make Greece a fantastic holiday destination. Visitors to this Mediterranean idyll with its archipelago of over 1000 islands are faced with such a range of natural and man-made attractions that they have to prioritize their travel plans. While everyone has an idea of what they prefer, let’s have a go at defining what might be the top ten places to visit on a holiday to Greece.

The Acropolis and the Parthenon
The symbol of Athens, the iconic Parthenon sits atop the Acropolis, overlooking the city. The remains of the sacred temple to the Greek godess Athena, the Parthenon, with its simple Doric style, has been copied in public architecture worldwide. Accessed by the Athens Metro, it is always crowded, so try for a visit early mornings or late afternoons.

Mykonos
Considered over-developed by some, but remaining the most famous of Greek islands, Mykonos attracts international sophisticates and budget travelers alike for its stunning beaches (many clothing optional), its vibrant nightlife, classic shopping, and general holiday ambience.

The Minoan Palace of Knossos, Crete
Surrounded by the city of Iraklion and accessible by local bus, the ruins and reconstructed labyrinth of this Minoan palace are from the era when the Aegean King Minos ruled mainland Greeks. To get some of the feeling for the material culture of ancient times, be sure to visit the world-class Heraklion Archaelogical Museum in Iraklion.

Santorini
Hotels clinging to clifftops, scenic winding roads, a volcanic legacy, great local wines and fine food puts Santorini on the list. Arrive at this stunning Greek island by sea and get the best views of the brown and black-banded cliffs topped by white lava. Be sure to visit the ruins of the once-buried city of Akrotiri.

Corfu
This bustling, cosmopolitan destination, in the Ionian Sea off the coast of mainland Greece, has streets lined with Venetian-style buildings. If you wish to avoid the pricey high-rise accommodation in the north, head for classic pensions in the wilder south where the coastline meets the placid waters in near perfect union.

Mycenae
This Peloponnesian treasure, only a few hour’s drive from Athens, was inhabited since Neolithic times. It sits on a hilltop on the lower slopes of Euboea Mountain and is considered one of the foundation sites of European civilization. One of the earliest restorations was the impressive Lion Gate.

The National Archaeological Museum – Athens
The perfect starting place for an infusion of Greek culture and history, this world-class museum teems with artifacts and sculptures. Look for the tall, dramatic kouroi, archaic statues of young gods, and the stunning gold treasures from excavations of Mycenae’s royal tombs.

The Island of Hydra
Visit this trendy Greek island via hydrofoil from Athens. Its charming harbor, beautiful churches, excellent shopping opportunities, and great tavernas provide a quintessential Greek experience.

Drogati and Melissnai Caves
One of the highlights of Kefalonia, Melissani is a subterranean seawater cave, which turns turquoise daily when the sun reaches a certain point. The spectacular Drogati Cave has impressive stalactites and boasts excellent acoustics.

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon
This popular cliff-top temple, set above the Aegean Sea, has superb sunset views. Although the Archeological Museum in Athens is home to the bronze statue that was once housed here, it is easy to see why the god of the sea might have been worshipped at this stunning national monument.

Travel insurance is important for all those who are planning to travel. For people who make trips abroad, travel insurance is essential because it saves them from all the unexpected money they spent either because they lost their baggage or because they suffered an accident in a foreign country.

The frustration of losing baggage or suffering accident in a foreign country can be huge but it can be overcome if the travel insurance company accepts the claim and pays back the money for the loss incurred by the customer. Although the benefits of buying travel insurance are many, yet people need to follow some useful tips to make their journey worthwhile, safe and secure.

Holiday insurance is offered by different companies in the market. In fact, the holiday insurance services are also offered by agencies that do not directly deal with insurance such as banks and credit card companies.

The banks and credit card companies are actually resellers who have a tie-up with the travel insurance companies and they get a commission for selling the holiday insurance packages. But when customers purchase travel insurance packages from these reseller, they actually end up paying them more because the commission keeps adding up on the original prices of the insurance products.

Therefore, it is advised that the customers purchase holiday insurance packages directly from the insurance company rather than from the reseller. Besides, there is another advantage of buying insurance directly from the company rather than from the reseller. The advantage is that the insurance company provides all the information needed for the customer including the any expected problems and other terms and conditions mentioned in the fine print.

But the reseller who himself has poor information about these terms and conditions in the fine print is unable to provide complete details to the customer. Problems become evident when the customer returns back from the journey and files a claim and when that claim is not processed by the insurance company, then the actual details of the insurance policy are revealed.

It is also advisable for all travelers to check the fine print in the holiday insurance policy documents before signing them off whether policy is offered by the reseller or directly by the insurance companies.

Sometimes, there may be difference in certain claims like the excesses where the customers also need to contribute over the losses they make but these excesses are limited to just one item, but an accident can involve damage to the camera and to the laptop as well as some injury to the body. In such cases, the insurance company can expect the customer to pay amounts under the excesses for each of the item including the injury.

These details are not known to the customer until the last moment when he goes about to make the claim. Some of these tips should be kept in mind right from the day one starts planning a holiday and getting the holiday insurance package from an insurance company or from a reseller.

If you are going on holiday make sure you have Travel Insurance also know as Holiday Insurance because you never know what might happen!
